See also: Active Citizenship Democracy is the foundation of Israel’s strength and the source of its vitality. IVN believes that only a democratic society—one based on equality, freedom, and justice—allows the individuals who compose it to express their desires and realize their full potential. Only in a democracy can the individual be an active partner in shaping the public space, thereby making full use of his or her talents as well as making a contribution to strengthening the society. Together with the New Israel Fund, IVN is implementing an Active Citizenship model in which every pupil will become well versed in the language of citizenship and experience active citizenship. In this way, young citizens will experience the power and contribution of the democratic tools that are available to them in becoming responsible and active citizens. The Active Citizenship Program is unique because:
The program, which began with teacher training, was launched in
Sderot in 2005. The pilot intervention in 2005-6 is taking place in
Sderot in 5 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools and 2 high
schools, covering 1400 students. Partners: The Active Citizenship initiative is a partnership between IVN and the New Israel Fund. The pilot program is being carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the local municipality of Sderot and is operating in Tuba-Zangariya and Kiryat Shmona.
